What size will Vizsla pups reach when fully grown?

A fully grown Vizsla can be a rather large dog but is classed as a medium sized hunting dog. They stand between 21-24 inches (53-61cm) tall, with the males tending to be on the higher end of the scale. This puts the head of a Vizsla at the high thigh to low hip area of an adult and its back roughly at your low thigh area.

The first thing you may notice about a Vizsla is that they are quite tall but usually very lean. They tend to weigh between 40-65 pounds (18-29kgs) depending on their height. Again the males tend to be on the heavier side due to their height.

Vizsla puppies have a beautiful short coat that feels very smooth when you touch it. Their coat sits close to their body and is amazing to look at. Their very short dense golden rust shaded coat is easy for you to maintain and will allow more time to be spent playing with your pooch.

How long will I need to spend grooming my Vizsla?

Their short dense coats require very little grooming from you. They rarely have a doggy smell to them which makes them a great indoors dog. However they can be known to shed like many other short haired breeds. To have them as indoors dogs it may be a good idea to remove some of this dead hair that would otherwise shed.

Using damp cloth or rubber brush you can simply wipe over their coat and remove this dead hair. Much quicker than waiting for it to end up on the floor of your home and starting up the vacuum cleaner! A lot of dogs love the rubber brushes as they are more like a gentle massage rather than a harsh bristle brush. In many cases your pup will love you for the pampering!

These types of shampoos leave your pup’s skin looking shiny and healthy while avoiding any skin conditions that may cause their skin and coat to be dry, dull and flaky. It is also important not to wash your dog too often. This can harm their skin and coat condition.

Vizsla’s usually benefit from you washing them monthly or whenever necessary depending on what they decide to roll around in. Sometimes you just can’t ignore whatever it was they rolled in at the park!

Do Vizsla pups have a long lifespan?

The average lifespan of a Vizsla is between 12 to 14 years of age. They are a relatively healthy breed with minimal illnesses. One of the more common conditions they can suffer from is Hip Dysplasia but you can minimize the risk of your Vizsla having this problem by getting it from a reputable breeder. By providing the right care, nutrition and veterinary care, you should have your Vizsla around for many happy and healthy years.

What sort of Temperament will a gorgeous Vizsla have?

Despite them having such a good nature, they can also be fearless hunters that excel at retrieving, tracking and many other skills. They are energetic and can be quite a handful for you if you don’t train them from an early age.

If you start socializing and training them from day one then you’ll find them to be quite obedient and eager to please.

These dogs definitely will be able to keep up with your kids and will play well with them. However it is always recommended that young children should always be supervised around a dog of this size. They do have a hunting instinct so any small animals such as rabbits (and to a lesser extent, cats) should be kept out of reach. Your Vizsla pups can get along with your other pets as long as you socialize them together from a very young age.

How much Exercise will my Vizsla need?

Vizslas are not for the faint hearted. If you’re looking for a laid back dog who will sit happily in the backyard, this isn’t the dog for you. They need at least once daily walks or jogs, but if you can take them twice it would be better. You will have a hard time making your Vizsla tired. You will give them the best exercise off lead so finding a safe secure park in your area would be a great idea. As well as running and general play, they are known to be good swimmers and love the water which can be another great way for you to give them the exercise they need.

If you were to leave one alone in an apartment you may come home to some destruction as these dogs do have a tendency to enjoy chewing, especially if they become bored.



Tip: These dogs have a natural ability to retrieve, track and will excel in these activities as well as general dog obedience. This is a great way for you to give them exercise and mental stimulation and will also give you a regular chance to bond with your pooch.

Am I the Ideal owner for Vizsla pups?

Vizslas are well suited to family life and would make a great addition to many homes. Full of spunk and energy, they will keep you and your kids active if you tend to their needs correctly. You will need to have them down at the park running around and retrieving a ball for you everyday to keep them happy.

Ideally you would need a medium sized yard or larger as they are likely to become bored and destructive in a small area. While they might do better outside during the day they love to be indoors at night with you and the family.
